| Bike in Boston? |
[May. 2nd, 2009|11:43 am] |
|
I'm looking to borrow a bike in Boston for the month of May and the first half of June for someone who is about 5'7" tall. Will exchange for delicious cooked or baked goods, for example, a cake of your choice, decorated, if that floats your boat. |

| Going to be in NYC this weekend! |
[Apr. 1st, 2009|10:51 am] |
Does anyone want to hang out on Saturday night? I think I'll be back from bar mitzvah in the afternoon. I would like to eat sushi. |

| This would seem to be my ski blog now. |
[Mar. 25th, 2009|10:56 am] |
Very short notice for a very good deal! If anyone wants to go skiing with me this Saturday at Killington, $60 gets you lift tickets, rentals, transportation there and back, and a 2 hour lesson. I couldn't resist. I can't get enough skiings.
In other news, Passover is coming, and my seder is on April 8th. More people is merrier, we will have a turkey and tasty traditional food! I have a solid chocolate seder plate... =D |

| I went skiing! |
[Mar. 8th, 2009|11:57 am] |
I went skiing without a car, and it was great!
I keep finding more things to love about Boston, and about this particular location in Boston where I live. The fact that I can roll out of bed and walk 5 minutes to get to the commuter rail station that will take me to somewhere to ski is so great! Also, skiing when it's 60 degrees outside is niiiiice. There was tons of snow thanks to the recent storm, and it had the texture of mashed potatoes.
Trail review: Started on Ralph's Run kept wondering where the slope was. "Green/blue" Yeah, not really. Easy green by the Maine standards that I'm used to. Hitchcock, NASTAR course, Challenger. "blue?!" Still green. Tried the other lift, took a go at Conifer Connection first (blue/black) and I liked it. My goal was to learn how to ski moguls, and there were some nice lumpy patches with decent slope (just perfect for me). I suspect that these were moguls from not being groomed rather than moguls from mounds of dirt, but they got bigger and bigger as the day progressed, and it was fun. The snow was very heavy, and skiing this was the most work of any of the trails. Since I could see 10th mountain trail (black) from the lift, and it didn't look that bad, I decided to try it. The trails at Wachusett are strange, in that they start off flat, and then hit slopier bits as you get farther down the mountain. It is very strange to see a sign for a black that looks more like a bunny slope. I think I skiied 10th mountain more than any other trail (with Confer Connection a close second). It was lovely and wonderful except for the steep part with the big moguls, which was hard. The trail had two sides, one with really big man-made moguls, and the other with wider, shorter, softer moguls. Needless to say, I wiped out a lot going down there, and most of the wipeoutage was psychological. I saw lumpy things and was like OMG going too fast and I can't slow down as much as I want because I have to make the next turn and keep going. So I often fell over instead, even though I CAN turn where/when I want to (often, I turned too soon rather than too late). Interesting, because I could do the less steep moguls much better. It was amusing how my brain worked, on the lift going up, I'd look at it and go "I can do this, I just did this, let's do it again" then I get to the top of the lift and turn to that trail and think "What did I just do, I remember how hard it was last time" and then progressing to "let's get down without falling this time!" (which I did at least 2-3 times). After that one part, the rest of the trail was so nice, and I really enjoyed it, so that was what I remembered most at the end of each run. There was part with moguls that wasn't as slippery/icy, and the moguls were forgiving, and I had fun with it. Smith Walton was the other black trail and it was steep and lumpy. I only did it once, maybe I shoulda tried it again at the end of the day. Salamander cutoff (black) really seemed no different from any of the blues, other than that it was narrower and kinda icy. It was actually refreshing to ski on ice as opposed to mashed potato snow for a bit. After our last trip to Sunday River, I'm not as afraid of ice anymore.
So whee, I skiied, from Boston, without a car, and I did every trail on the mountain, and learned a bit about moguls. The snow was really perfect for learning moguls, as it was soft and wet, so you'd go more slowly, and pretty good to fall into also. I was on the slopes for 7-8 hours, I think. I made two waffle stops, because I can't resist belgian waffles. The kind that are served hot with crunchy caramelized sugar? So yummy!
I'm thinking that I'll do this a few times next winter to get better at skiing. The choices for trails are kinda limited, because I don't want to get used to skiing on things that aren't steep, but it's a really nice day away from the city. |

| I want to go skiing! |
[Mar. 2nd, 2009|12:21 am] |
And not much is going to stop me.
The plan is to get on the Ski Train from North Station on Saturday morning (7th), take it to Wachusset, and ski, ski, ski all day Saturday, then catch the train back at 9PMish. Anyone else interested? It should cost about $100 for the day, and I totally deserve a break from weeks of writing/thinking/working on this grant. Which will be sent out on Weds (I hope).
Other plans afoot are for the celebration of Pi day (3/14/09) in the traditional manner. Where/when still up in the air, but what = pie, lots of it, and who = mine friends.
The 15th is the Ras na hEireann at o'early o'clock, followed hopefully by o'beer o'clock in Davis Square.
... all this snow! Must skiiiii! ... |

| Oh, Mr Weatherman! |
[Mar. 1st, 2009|12:04 pm] |
You tantalize me with your words, and promise of a lot of snow.
"Todays snow and flurries in southern New England is just a tease for whats coming tonight."
But really, Mr. Weatherman, is something else coming tonight that we should be aware of? |

| Another awesome Arisia! |
[Jan. 20th, 2009|04:26 pm] |
Put in 28 volunteer hours, whee! Feeding the hungry masses is a fun job, and I had much fun doing it. Time flies when you've got food to prep.
My transportation worries were valid, but not as bad as I thought except for Sunday night, where it took about 2 hours of waiting, sitting, and riding to get home. No walking though, I'm a chicken. I biked, I was driven, I bussed, I taxi'd. Next time, having a bed at the con will be more of a priority, because I really do feel that I missed a lot of the convention either in transit or in bed.
I went to my first drum circle at this Arisia, and the experience made me feel exeptionally human. At that point, I realized that I was participating in something that people do by instinct, and have done for as long as we have been human. Definitely an experience to repeat, and an incentive to improve my bellydancing skills!
(Also, it is so nice to run around for most of a weekend wearing a skirt of veils and a coin belt. And also, to wear my corset... poor thing hasn't gotten much use.) |

Going to the Klezmer Nutcracker with my mom on Tuesday morning at 11AM.

| Random thoughts... |
[Dec. 10th, 2008|10:23 am] |
I love the smell of pine. And wood smoke. And little lights all over the place. So, biking through Beacon Hill makes me happy because it's got all these things. It just feels so old towny and traditional, the way a holiday should be. The way the holidays are in the Macys animated windows. I look forward to living vicariously through other people's holiday trees.
( Reflections on being all grown up... ) So this year as a gift to myself I bought myself a KitchenAid mixer! Because it's something that I've wanted for quite a while and while it's a luxury it's very much one I'm going to use a lot. And also kinda impulsively last night, but I woke up and went "squee, mixer!" rather than "oh no what did I do last night". This purchase has motivated me to work on fixing my closet to be half pantry and stow a lot of the things that currently live on my counter in the closet so that my mixer can have counterspace.
I'm thinking that I don't really need any of the accessories for it at the moment (geesh, they're all so expensive) but maybe the silicone blade thingy. Or maybe the citrus juicer. I love juice but I hate the squeezings of many fruits. I can't believe that they make ice cream makers for it... and pasta rollers and meat grinders and veggie slicers and sausage stuffers and grain mills.
So, if anyone has a desire for a holiday gift of baked goods, I'm, umm, eager to test the mixer when it arrives. There will be marshmallowage galore to bring to Matt's family, and hopefully poundcakeage to give to all the people here at school. I love making gifts! |

[Nov. 23rd, 2008|11:17 am] |
Anyone up for Yuka tomorrow night (Monday)?
I'm around and available for hanging out today, Mon, Tues, Weds during the day (I think I'm going to a concert Weds night, but my band gets on at midnight), and next Sunday. |

| Eep eep! |
[Nov. 19th, 2008|10:21 am] |
I can't believe that I'm going to NYC tomorrow! I have so many things to do!
My mom has discovered that people like recieving baked goods, and that I like making baked goods. ( cthulia was it the Joy of Cooking gingerbread recipe that is your favorite?) She has promised several loaves of bread, cookies, and a large chocolate cake. I think my handmixer is going on an adventure! (I have a suspicion that I might buy a new one in NYC and leave my beloved old one in NYC... the beaters are starting to fall apart... poor thing has had 10 years of heavy use.)
(And speaking of cookies, cookie decorating party on December 7th... is anyone coming? If the date is bad, December 21 is also open if that works better for more people.)
NYC folks, let me know about fun things that are going on! =D This is the longest I'm going to be in town until this time next year!

| For both Boston and NYC friends |
[Nov. 11th, 2008|09:03 am] |
1. I have a lot of beer in my apartment. Let us festively consume some of this beer and I will make Guinness beef stew to go along with it. This weekend, maybe Saturday night? I also have a lot of apples which make tasty pie.
2. I'm going to be in NYC from Nov 20 to Dec 1. I have not had sushi since that last trip to Yuka in which I really didn't eat much sushi. Let us go to Yuka and eat sushi! And let us have fun in other ways, because I have missed being in NYC and seeing my NYC friends.
3. I'm running the Jingle Bell Run (5K) on December 14th. Is anyone else? |

| Gingerbread party plans! |
[Oct. 27th, 2008|01:26 pm] |
I was thinking to have my annual gingerbread party on December 7th (Sunday afternoon). Save the date.
(Grrr, scheduling of school stuff... three presentations in a row, two journal clubs one before the party one after, and my big student talk the week after.)
The Jingle Bell run is on the 14th, but I'm giving a talk on the 15th so I'm not sure if I should run it or not. |

| Apple picking! |
[Oct. 3rd, 2008|10:34 pm] |
I want to go! It's fall and I long for a day in the orchard enjoying crisp fall air and tasty apples (and cider donuts and caramel apples).
Does anyone have a car who wants to go to an orchard sometime? I'm free this weekend for the most part except for needing to go to the farm in Waltham on Sunday.
Taking matters into my own hands and going to try the commuter rail + bike method. Thinking 11:20 or 1:30 train to South Acton which is then a 5-6 mile ride to orchard. Doable! And I will get to smugly pass the line of cars heading to the orchard. =D |

| Dreams... |
[Sep. 28th, 2008|12:37 pm] |
I think I had a whole bunch of weird dreams last night...
I was riding the #4 bus home from downtown, bus gets to 171st street and doesn't stop, so I get off at the next stop and take the bus back towards my house. Somehow I find myself after seemingly 5 minutes or so down at 72nd street or so and I'm very confused as to how I got THERE so fast. I try to explain myself to the other passengers on the bus, and everyone thinks I'm crazy. So then I ride back uptown again and I talk to someone who has a the illustrated review of pharmacology book and a First Aid book, thus proclaiming them to be a med student.
And then a fragment of cell phone acting really weird that I can't tell is from real life or dream, but I remember thinking that the phone is old and I need a new one.
Then another fragment of realizing that I'm in NYC and that I have to call BSD and folks to see what's going on and to hang out.
My head, evidently, hasn't gotten itself around the fact that I live in Boston now because I still dream in NYC. |
